Giving Thanks

With the Thanksgiving holiday now a memory, and upcoming is the date we acknowledge the Incarnation, maybe it is a good time to in essence begin the coming year as we also celebrate the passing of this one. From a few days ago, this was the devotional that says a lot more than it may appear I think.

THANKFULNESS takes the sting out of adversity. That is why I have instructed you to give thanks for everything. There is an element of mystery in this transaction: You give Me t...

Sinning Less 2

Posted by Bill H on November 16, 2011 at 2:35 AM Comments comments (1)

Been doing some thinking about that question of sinning less, some earlier thoughts here.  Last week a posting by Tim Dalrymple about premarital sexual relations caused a little stir and ruffled some feathers I think (my thoughts here and here - you will find the links to the original posts there).  There was a lot about sinning there and some thoughts that are a little off, IMHO about recognizing sin, here I spend a little more time on that question. I have heard it ...

The Football Coach Who Fell from Grace from the Top of the Goalposts

Confession - I listen, a lot, to sports radio in Chicago, and for the most part that means 670 AM. The afternoon and evening guys are a little abrasive at times - then again I'm also guessing the reason for that is some need to stir the pot a little and pull in listeners, etc. So I suppose nothing personal but still a little heavy on the snarky from time to time.

Well, of course the news about the terrible events...

Sex at Seminary Dust Up 2

Part 1 is here. The next couple of points from Professor Paeth are, I think, really where he is aiming. He suggests traditional sexual ethics simply aren’t relevant.

for most Christians, as for most people in general, if a moral norm seems irrelevant

Sex at Seminary Dust Up 1

Posted by Bill H on November 8, 2011 at 1:45 AM Comments comments (0)

It seems like a little dust up is abrew in the Christian blogosphere. Tim Dalrymple posted a blog about his experience in seminary where his fellow students apparently ran with a looser attitude toward intramural sex, drinking and drugs. I suspect his point wasn't necessarily about his particular seminary, but rather about the changing clim...

Thoughts on Good Works and Social Justice

Posted by Bill H on November 2, 2011 at 2:25 AM Comments comments (0)

Last week there was a little stir going on at Jesus Creed concerning social justice and good works. I've posted on that as my thinking goes along the lines that this focus on social justice isn't really all that it seems. I know, and you can see it in some of the respo...

Falling Down

Posted by Bill H on October 31, 2011 at 3:15 AM Comments comments (0)

From time to time as Christ followers we may be called to consider how are we doing in this faith walk. Many times I think we ask ourselves if we are also following the ideal of Western civilization - independent, self-suffcient, and such things. I remember reading a fair amount of Brennan Manning and he speaks much about this condition - which is not terminal but may be lifelong. Sometimes I think we have to experience "failure" in the worldly sense of that word in order to un...

Holding On

Posted by Bill H on October 28, 2011 at 5:00 AM Comments comments (0)

Sometimes we like to hold on tightly to the stuff we have, I think. Not that holding on isn't a bad thing, just that sometimes it will take a little more of us than we realize or really want to lose.

Here is part of the devotional I read for today (the 21st) that reminds me it is all His in the first place. Maybe that was the lesson of the Garden way back - it never really was ours in the first place. Maybe that ste...
